The Goodness of Correction

There is goodness and godliness in allowing spiritually mature mentors and pastors to speak godly correction into our lives. This is something we need to be open to and see as a good thing.

Scriptures from today’s podcast:

Mentorship:

  • Proverbs 27:17: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

  • 2 Timothy 2:2: "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will be able to teach others also."

  • Galatians 6:1: "Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted."

Correction:

  • Hebrews 12:11

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  • Proverbs 15:31-32:

    Whoever heeds life-giving correction
will be at home among the wise.

Those who disregard discipline despise themselves,
but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.

  • Proverbs 10:17:

"Accept correction, and you will find life; reject correction, and you will miss the road."

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17:

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

  • Proverbs 9:9:

"Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be more wise; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning."

  • Titus 2:1-5

You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
